'Belfast will recognise that trees and green space should be a right for all people, and environmental exclusion must be avoided'
Belfast Council is to carry out a detailed ‘tree mapping’ exercise in a bid to achieve greater equality in greenery across the city.
Anto Flynn, a Green councillor in East Belfast, welcomed the news. He added: “We have huge swathes of the city, particularly in North Belfast where there are little or no trees and it is working class area that suffer the most. The lack of trees, the proximity to roads or even motorways, all these things are having an impact on air quality, on people’s health on their mental health.
It states that the “benefits of trees should be made available to all people in all areas of the city”. Mayor Ryan Murphy said: “We’re honoured to have been entrusted to plant this Survivor tree in Belfast today, symbolising the resilience of life, a desire for peace - and marking the launch of our new Belfast Tree Strategy, which is all about protecting Belfast’s trees, woodlands, and hedges for today, and for future generations.
