The Wall2Wall project works with young people living on either side of the Cupar Way peace wall in Clonard and Shankill
Young people living on opposite sides of Belfast's longest peace wall have been sharing their experiences as part of a project looking at the impact of the walls.
Now, the group of 16 young people have put together a photographic exhibition, which is on display at 2 Royal Avenue in Belfast city centre until October 31. It includes quotes from the young people, as well as photos and analysis of peace walls in Belfast, Cyprus, and Berlin. The project is aiming to bring young people into the conversation around the futue of peace walls in Northern Ireland. Peace walls were first put up as lines at the start of the Troubles in the late 1960s to divide some unionist and nationalist areas. Hundreds were made across Northern Ireland and by 2023, 60 remained, mostly in Belfast.
"Young people's voices are never in the conversation. I would go and look at the Assembly stuff and they're never talking about young people - it's all about green and orange. I'm trying to build a future for not just me but my kids and grandkids. Why would I want my kids and grandkids stuck behind a wall not knowing people from the other side?"
Blain said: "I would personally love to see the walls down but I can't see it ever happening, I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime. I don't even think my kids will see it down. "It was only one generation ago it happened. We have moved a lot forward, not as much as we want to, but we have from the past generation."
