Belgium's World Cup risks a sad ending for a golden generation that has finally fallen apart 🟢 MsiDouglas
It was some defence of a group that must conjure a much better performance to remain alive in a tournament that Martinez insists is difficult for the best teams because of the lack of time squads have had to prepare.
He said: “We were a group already, we were united but perhaps not enough. If you want to go far in a World Cup you need to be united, to be able to fight for your team-mates and maybe we weren’t doing that enough,” he said. It was put to Martinez that this “golden generation” are having similar struggles to that which England’s crop of players that underperformed between 2002-2010 had. But he argued that success should not just be measured by tournament results, the best of which saw Belgium finish third in 2018.
