Thirteen years on, there is little Bellingham cannot do. The reputation of the complete midfielder is supposed to be bestowed with age and experience, but let’s break some more rules. When England were under pressure against Senegal, Bellingham was the tigrish ball winner. When England need someone to glide forward on the counter attack, watch how he flies. But is he a goalscorer? Well he has 10 for club and country this season and it’s early December.
At Birmingham, Bellingham made his first-team debut aged 16 in September 2018 and simply stayed in the team. At Dortmund, Bellingham played 29 games in his first season and has never been named on the bench since. With England – not least because we were crying out for a player in his mould – this mind trick is even more emphatic. Before June, Bellingham’s only competitive international starts were against Andorra and San Marino. Now it is impossible to conceive an England midfield without him.
The more persuasive argument is that Bellingham’s greatest asset is intangible: he’s got it [points to brain with forefinger]. This weekwas asked to assess and explain Bellingham’s potential. The answer, he was keen to point out, lies in the mind. “There were a few at Chelsea during my time that I felt were always there every time in training: Cole, Lampard, Drogba, Terry, there were others. Players who perhaps weren’t super-gifted physically or even super-gifted technically – although on a high level – but the mental aspect of it took them to a different level of performance. Jude I think has those attributes.”
