'I’m a songwriter. So I kind of shape-shift a little bit, depending on the narrative and the song.”

Jenny Lewis performed at the 2023 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Manchester, Tenn. She has a concert scheduled in Alabama on June 30, 2024, at Iron City.Jenny Lewis grew to indie rock fame as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the Los Angeles-based group Rilo Kiley before setting out on a solo career.

Hello Jenny! I think you’re one of those interesting artists whose work is hard to sum up. If someone were talking to you about your music, I’m curious how you would describe it to them if they’ve never heard it before. “So, on ‘Joy’All,’ I worked with Dave Cobb in Nashville, where I live now. And so he brought his sensibility to these songs that I had been tinkering with, traveling all over the world. I was working on while on tour, and under lockdown during COVID in L.A. So it’s really like the cast of characters surrounding the record that kind of bring the vibe and their influences.”

“It’s way more diverse than just the Grand Old Opry, which is amazing, too. You know, I get to play at the Ryman , which is the mother church where the Grand Old Opry started, and I’m actually going to be playing the Opry proper, which is so amazing. “And there’s yeah, there’s a lot going on. It’s an interesting time for country music because a lot of people who have done pop music are leaning into the country thing, which I think is a very ripe style for good lyrics. Yeah, I think it’s great. You know, country music songs do a lot of things, you know? They’re just a really good form to tell a story.”

“For ‘Puppy and the Truck,’ which I wrote in Nashville, that was another Beck-related thing. He had a songwriting workshop with a bunch of cool artists. That was one of the songs I wrote for that. And you have some very impressive friends, so the pressure’s got to be high! It’s got to be a pretty high bar when all your friends are also excellent musicians, and you’re trying to impress them.“Being on this Postal Service tour, I was just in awe of Ben as a writer, because we’re doing ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Give Up,’ and he’s singing both sets. And the songs are perfect. And he wrote them in 2003. In one year, he wrote both of those records, and he’s got perfect pitch.

... That is just a part of the fluidity of the songwriters who I think felt restless in their bands. So I’m not the first to do it. “I mean, there’s always some drama, especially if people are dating in the band. So sure. There’s been some epic meltdowns. “And hopefully, the stakes won’t be too high. So I can make exactly what I want to make. I think that’s been important for me to keep things a little bit reined in and a little bit chill. So I can kind of take these risks.”
