Edinburgh Zoo mourns the loss of Kevyn, an elderly red panda who died this weekend after facing age-related health issues. Kevyn's death follows the tragic passing of two other red pandas earlier this year, suspected to be linked to firework stress.

Edinburgh Zoo has announced the passing of Kevyn, an elderly red panda , who died this past weekend. Kevyn was 14 years old and had been experiencing age-related health issues. He was receiving specialized care from the zoo's expert keepers and veterinarians. Kevyn had spent ten years at Highland Wildlife Park, where he fathered seven offspring, before being transferred to Edinburgh Zoo in 2022. He resided there with a female red panda named Priya.

The zoo described Kevyn as a beloved figure among both staff and visitors. His death follows the tragic loss of two other red pandas, Roxie and Ginger, who died earlier this year, suspected to be due to stress caused by fireworks. Roxie, a three-month-old, choked on her own vomit on Bonfire Night, and Ginger died unexpectedly five days prior. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has been advocating for stricter regulations on pyrotechnics since these incidents. They argue that fireworks can cause significant distress to animals, including those in zoos, and believe that public access to fireworks should be restricted, with only organized displays being permitted. A public petition calling for stricter firework regulations garnered over a million signatures and was presented to the UK Government in November
