Nottingham Forest have received a boost in their pursuit of Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey , as the former Everton player is being allowed to leave the Italian club. Recent reports suggested Godfrey was a target for Forest as they seek to strengthen their defense ahead of their push for a UEFA Champions League spot this season.
After joining Serie A last summer for a reported £11 million, Godfrey has made just five appearances in all competitions, struggling to make an impact in a strong Atalanta side currently leading Italy's top tier. The 26-year-old is reportedly keen on a 'change of scenery' with the Premier League a 'priority'. Forest face competition from Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and AS Roma who are also reportedly interested in the defender. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Godfrey's situation, stating on X: 'Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey can leave Atalanta in January as he’s no longer key for their project. Discussions to follow as Godfrey is not even in squad list for Super Cup.' Previously with Everton and Norwich City, Godfrey would provide valuable Premier League experience and versatility to Forest's backline. Primarily a center-back, he can also play as a right-back or even in central midfield. Nuno Espírito Santo's side are reportedly taking a cautious approach to January transfer dealings in an effort to maintain squad harmony and momentum. Forest currently sit third in England's top division after a remarkable first half of the season and boast the third-best defense in the league (19 conceded), behind only Arsenal and league leaders Liverpool who have both conceded 17.
