Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley open up about joining the This Morning team, the surprising way they originally met and why Cat decided to leave the United States behind
This Morning is ready for a refresh on ITV, with the show welcoming two new faces onto the sofa – Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley. The pair are replacing Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield after months of hosting hearsay, and it’s an exciting gig to get – although Ben admits he’s most excited to leave the Good Morning Britain wake-up calls behind.
But he’s gutted to be leaving his “on-screen wife of nearly 20 years”, Kate Garraway. He says abandoning his GMB co-star, who recently lost her husband Derek Draper, made joining This Morning the “hardest decision”. “I’ve been hosting solo for the past few years and I’ve really missed that sense of camaraderie,” says Cat, 47. “Whenever This Morning is on, it’s like having your friends over – funny, smart, heartfelt, informative and joyful – like all the greatest friendships.”
It isn’t the first time on This Morning for Cat or Ben though, with both guest-presenting the show over the years. “I first got to host with the lovely Fern Britton. I was a last-minute call-up and I remember sitting on the bus on the way home, daydreaming about the fact I’d just hosted it,” says Ben.
