Benefits people of State Pension age can still claim when they go into a care home

In August 2022 there were more than 17,000 care homes registered across the UK, consisting of private care homes, voluntary care homes and public care homes run by local authorities and the NHS. The figures show that there are a total of 1,025 in Scotland, 14,535 in England, 1,024 in Wales and 405 in Northern Ireland.

The Department for Work and Pensions has published new guidance on benefits you can claim while in a care home. The guidance on GOV.UK explains that you can claim some benefits during your stay in a care home if you pay for all of your care yourself. You must tell the office that pays your benefit as soon as possible if you go into a care home for one night or longer - a friend or relative can call for you. You should also tell them if you stay in a hospital and get benefits - find out more here.

People in Scotland will also need to give details about their application for free personal and nursing care, if they’ve made one - find out more here.
