Families who lost loved ones to Covid-19 have criticized the UK government's vaccine rollout, highlighting disparities in access, prioritization, and implementation across different regions.
Bereaved families have criticized the seemingly haphazard rollout of the coronavirus vaccine in the UK, raising concerns about the criteria for classifying key workers and the accessibility of vaccines for rural communities . During the UK Covid-19 inquiry on Wednesday, representatives from bereaved families shared their experiences and highlighted disparities in the vaccine program's implementation across different regions of the country.
Fiona Clarke, representing the Northern Ireland Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, pointed out the discrepancy in vaccine mandates for care home staff. While the English government indicated in June 2021 that vaccines would become compulsory for this sector, the devolved government in Northern Ireland did not adopt a similar approach. Clarke described the vaccine rollout as 'haphazard,' noting a lack of coordination between different regions. She also stressed the need for a more tailored approach to vaccinating rural communities, suggesting the use of mobile clinics or on-call doctors to administer vaccines directly. Melanie Newdick, whose mother died after contracting Covid-19, criticized the uneven pace of the vaccine rollout across the UK, including Scotland. She lamented the slowdown in vaccine delivery during the Christmas period, which she believes impacted timely vaccination for many, particularly in remote areas. Newdick also raised concerns about the current system for arranging vaccinations in Scotland, where access via GPs has been significantly limited since April 2023. She argued that the centralized system, requiring individuals to book appointments at vaccination clinics, poses a significant challenge for rural communities, where travel distances can be extensive. Helena Rossiter, representing the group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK, shared the story of her son, Peter, a teacher who tragically died from Covid-19 in August 2021, despite receiving his first vaccine dose in May 2021. Rossiter questioned why teachers, who were deemed key workers during the pandemic, were not prioritized for vaccination earlier. She also raised concerns about the lack of priority given to workers in other essential industries, such as transport, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach to vaccine distribution. The inquiry is currently in its fourth module, focusing on the development and implementation of the UK's vaccine program, including barriers to vaccination uptake, public confidence in the vaccines, accessibility issues, and concerns regarding vaccine safety
