It was to house the Del Ray Club, a residence for male UC Berkeley students.A century ago, on Aug. 23, 1924, a new structure that the Berkeley Daily Gazette called “Berkeley’s largest and finest office building” opened.

Interestingly, this office building opened the same month as Telegraph Avenue’s Physicians Building, which I wrote about last week in this column. Several years ago, local resident Daniella Thompson wrote a successful landmark application for the Kroeber building, which still stands today.On Aug. 22, 1924, the Gazette reported that ground had been broken on a new clubhouse for the Del Ray Club, a residence for male students, on Euclid Avenue near the corner of Le Conte Avenue.

Market Street was well known for its special bright street lighting, and Berkeley merchants wanted to emulate that in downtown. They were consulting on the possibility of forming a special lighting district.Berkeley was having a primary election on Aug. 25, 1924, and Berkeley police had cracked down on illegal sign posting the week before.

On the ballot were a “three-cornered contest for county supervisor,” party nominations for two state Assembly seats and primaries for Berkeley’s congressional representative.
