After moving though the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm since Friday evening, Beryl is expected to strengthen before making landfall.

After a couple of days as a tropical storm, Beryl is moving into the northwest Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. After struggling to organize for much of the day on Saturday, Beryl is heading into an area that’s more favorable for strengthening. Wind shear is expected to decrease by Sunday afternoon and evening. In addition, Beryl is moving over extremely warm water. The northwestern Gulf of Mexico, along the Texas coast, has sea surface temperatures of 86 to 88 degrees.

Here's what a warm Gulf of Mexico means for hurricane season. Beryl’s forecast track Beryl will continue in a northwest direction through the early part of the day. By noon, Beryl is expected to be less than 200 miles away from the Texas coastline. At that point, the storm is projected to start curving north. During the afternoon and evening, optimal conditions for strengthening are anticipated.
