Bexar County is launching the first phase of a new gun safety and education initiative that’s seeking to find the root causes of the spike in gun violence.

FILE - A pistol is seen at the Association of the U.S. Army Annual Meeting's exposition hall at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on October 11, 2023, in Washington, D.C. Bexar County is launching the first phase of a new gun safety and education initiative that’s seeking to find the root causes of the spike in gun violence . It’s the first of its kind and the county is taking a data-driven approach to find a solution.

Bexar County will provide those partnering organizations with funding, up to $15,000. Those organizations will help the county gather information and community input on gun violence concerns. Gibson said the community is seeing a big spike in gun violence amongst teens and is relieved that Bexar County is taking the first step to try and identify the root cause.

“The grassroots organization is us meeting locally with our community members where they tell us, hey, these robberies are going on. This is what's happening, and we need help in these areas,” said Williams.
