I spent my childhood trying to legitimise the idea that Beyoncé and I were related. That our ancestors, enslaved peoples stolen from Africa, were family and that slave traders cruelly separated them, sending hers to America and mine to the Caribbean. I was so desperate for a connection to a Black woman that my peers actually liked, hoping that affection would flow on to me, that I would romanticise slavery.
Beyoncé stresses the importance of education. My mum did too, only with the added warning that I’d have to work twice as hard as a white person to get half as far; meritocracy is a myth, especially when you’re Black.
