Did you know that once a nuclear weapon is launched, there is currently no way to abort the mission? Find out why.

The absence of self-destruct option on nuclear weapons is by design, but experts argue the time is right to revoke this.Current global nuclear military doctrine is based on a game of cat and mouse where the outcome could well be the destruction of the human race. It revolves around the assumption that any belligerent deployment of nuclear weapons upon one nuclear nation, no matter how limited, could result in an all-out thermonuclear war.

And the threat is very real. If the unthinkable does happen, it would take only a matter of minutes for hundreds, if not thousands, of warheads to be launched.or their marine equivalents, can carry multiple nuclear warheads each. Only a few of these are enough to erase a city from the map completely.

The long and short of it is that policymakers deliberately prevent the possibility. The irony, however, is that most systems have fail-disable systems installed during their testing phase. These systems are regularly tested and triggered when the missile performs outside its expected parameters.missile did just that in November last year. During a routine nighttime test launch, that particular LGM-30G test vehicle ‘safely terminated’ over the Pacific Ocean.

Other munitions, such as anti-aircraft cannon shells, tracer ammunition, and torpedoes, also have more rudimentary ‘self-destruct’ failsafe. These are designed to render munitions inert in the all-too-common chance they miss their targets., a treaty between the US and the Soviet Union, laid out a protocol to reduce nuclear threat and exercise a policy of restraint. However, it is not entirely reassuring.

After that, the missile’s engine shuts down, and the launch vehicle travels another 20 minutes in a parabolic arc. Once near the target, the warheads return to Earth in the reentry phase and from their path toward the final destination. As the reentry vehicle carrying the warhead enters the atmosphere, it is enveloped in a plasma sheath. This plasma interferes with the reception of radio waves. Hence, during the reentry and descent phases, which last about a minute, it is only possible to transmit abort instructions once the plasma has dissipated.
