A step in the plan to expand South Australia copper production

The South Australian government has gazetted the start of an application and assessment process for BHP 's planned Olympic Dam smelter and refinery expansion to up to 650,000t of refined copper cathode per annum by the mid-2030s.The Olympic Dam smelter and refinery, which is one of just two in Australia, turned out 322,000t in the 2023-24 financial year.The notification of the application and assessment process is a step forward for the project.

37 per pound of copper and generated underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of US$1.6 billion, up 123% on the US$700 million in the previous fiscal.The division is expected to turn out 310-340,000t of copper cathode in FY25.Expansion plansThe expansion of the smelter and refinery complex is expected to go forward in two stages.The first part is to expand production to 500,000tpa by the early 2030s. That will involve a two-stage smelter configuration with 1.1-1.
