The hack involves sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on the seal, spritzing it with water, scrubbing with a brush, leaving it for 10 minutes, and then running a rinse cycle. Bicarbonate of soda's anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties help absorb odors and clean the seal effectively.
While it may seem counterintuitive, washing machines do require regular cleaning. Over time, mould and fluff can accumulate on the rubber seal rim of the machine.
Instead, Lyndsey Queen of Clean, a popular TikTok user, has shared a simple, natural method for keeping your washing machine clean. In her video, she advises: "Another quick tip to banish stinky odours and mould build-up in your washing machine rubber seal." She adds: "Don't forget this time of year, your machine will smell more than ever with the higher temperatures." Bicarbonate of soda, which boasts anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, is an excellent cleaning agent and can be purchased from supermarkets like Aldi for just 59p, or other stores such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's.
