A bicyclist was killed after being hit by a box truck in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Friday morning, according to authorities.
The crash happened at the intersection of Hampshire and Portland streets around 8:20 a.m., Cambridge police said. The bicyclist, a 24-year-old Cambridge woman whose name wasn't released, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where she later died from her injuries, police said. Preliminary police investigation suggests that the truck and the bicycle were traveling in the same direction on Hampshire Street and the truck was making a right turn at the time of the crash. Police said the truck driver remained at the scene. The organization Cambridge Bicycle Safety says they’ve been fighting for more protections, including more bike lanes.Other riders say they'd like to see those improvements sooner rather than later.
“I’ve definitely had a lot of close calls,” said Elizabeth Cambridge, who bikes in Cambridge. “The protected bike lanes are great but as we’ve seen now in the last few weeks, there are more things that we could do with the intersections specifically. There’s infrastructure that could be put in to slow down trucks and other vehicles like cars too.”More Massachusetts news
