Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law a bill to extend the candidate certification deadline for the November election that will allow President Biden to appear on the state’s November ballot. Ivey did so Thursday after state lawmakers sent the bill to her desk, according to a spokesperson, Gina Maiola. The proposal received nearly unanimous, bipartisan support in both chambers of the GOP-controlled state legislature.
He said Biden was at risk of being left off the ballot because the Democratic National Convention was scheduled to occur after the state’s certification deadline. Alabama Democrats complained that the GOP had made special accommodations when Republicans were in a similar bind in previous elections. The Biden campaign suggested “provisional” certification as a solution this year, but Allen balked at it. The state’s Democrats ultimately settled on seeking a legislative remedy.
