BREAKING: Joe Biden has arrived in Kyiv to meet Volodymyr Zelensky in a surprise visit.
Mr Zelensky shared a photograph of himself with his American counterpart on Telegram shaking hands ahead of the one-year anniversary of the war.
‘Joseph Biden, welcome to Kyiv!’ he wrote. ‘Your visit is an extremely important sign of support for all Ukrainians.’Mr Biden said in a statement: ‘As the world prepares to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, I am in Kyiv today to meet with President Zelenskyy and reaffirm our unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
To the sounds of air raids blaring, Mr Biden was filmed walking through Mykhailivska Square to honour the fallen soldiers of the Russia-Ukraine war, according to local news outlet Украина Сейчас. Mr Biden added that his administration will send around $500 million of additional assistance to Ukraine with details to be released in the coming days.‘When Putin launched his invasion nearly one year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided,’ he said.Got a story?
