Biden, Trump agree to June and September debates but clash on details, likely canceling the scheduled fall debate at Texas State University.
In effect from 7 am Thursday to 7 am Friday for the possibility of flooding rain. 1.5 to 3" possible, isolated higher.President Biden and former President Trump have agreed to hold debates in June and September, but not at Texas State University in the fall as previously planned. The Biden campaign on Wednesday proposed holding the first debate in late June and the second in September, before early voting begins.
However, Biden's campaign also said the president will not participate in the previously scheduled debate at Texas State on September 16, which was to be hosted by the Commission on Presidential Debates. Instead, the campaign called for the debates to be organized by media outlets that hosted primary debates in 2016 and 2020.
The dueling proposals mean the Texas State debate, which was slated to be the first of the 2024 general election, is unlikely to happen. The Biden and Trump campaigns remain far apart on key questions of how to organize the debates, including agreeing on media partners, moderators, location and rules. The Biden campaign proposed excluding third-party candidates, while Trump pushed for more than two debates in large venues.
