Child poverty in Glasgow is costing the city up to £1.09 billion a year it is estimated as one senior councillor warns some private landlords actually contribute to the problem.has received £19.4 million from the Scottish Government Whole Family Wellbeing Fund to tackle the problem. New ways to fight poverty are being drawn up to help improve the lives of poor families in the city.

“I want to say there are some absolutely fabulous private landlords out there who do a really really good job. We wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things in the city without their support but they are not all knights in shining armour.” Councillor Bell said: “The requirement for this additional expenditure is quite simply outrageous and unacceptable.”

She asked about immediate interventions for the Govanhill area to overcome this and said it is at a “crisis level” for children living there. An official said work has already kicked off in Govanhill to help families as Southside Central has been identified as one of a number of “booster wards” where special steps are taken to help communities.
