EXCLUSIVE: The charity Open Seas said 90,000 tons of mackerel getting landed in overseas harbours meant Scots fishing communities weren't seeing the benefits.
Big Scots fishing boats have been accused of “bypassing the local economy” after it emerged they land more than a third of their catches in foreign ports.
However, this has been repeatedly challenged by large fishing organisations who warn it would hammer industry revenues. “Scottish and UK ministers have a legal duty to ensure that private benefit is balanced against social and environmental ones.” More than half of Scotland's mackerel was landed at ports in other countries - 52 per cent of total tonnage and 53 per cent by value.
