🔴 NHS nurses set to strike in December leaving patients facing further hospital delays

The action is expected to, with non-urgent operations postponed and waiting times extended for patients to be admitted from A&E. Fewer nurses on non-emergency wards will make it harder to discharge patients and free up beds.

Junior doctors, midwives and paramedics are preparing for strike action this winter. Meanwhile, physiotherapists will start voting on Monday on whether to strike over pay, increasing the threat of widespread industrial action in the NHS before the end of the year. The RCN said that while the latest offer from the Scottish Government is an improvement for the lowest paid, it is a further pay cut for registered nurses and “fails to recognise their clinical skills and safety critical role”.

Those exempt from taking part will include any nurse involved in emergency care without which life would be jeopardised or permanent disability would occur. Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden said in the event of industrial action, the NHS would prioritise the most essential services, although he acknowledged that it would have an impact on other activity.
