TerraPower and the DOE have broken ground on the US' first next-gen Natrium reactor, set for completion by 2030.

Natrium reactors use sodium instead of water as a coolant and are non-pressurized, operating at temperatures below sodium’s boiling point. The US has formally initiated the construction of its first next-generation nuclear reactor at Wyoming, which it aims to complete by 2030.

The reactor will be TerraPower’s first plant, built through a public-private partnership with the DOE’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program . Unlike traditional reactors, TerraPower’s design makes use of natural forces like heat convection and gravity to provide passive cooling and drastically lower safety-related expenses.

“The design was far safer than any existing plant, with the temperatures held under control by the laws of physics instead of human operators who can make mistakes. It would have a shorter construction timeline and be cheaper to operate,” said Gates.
