Former governor-general and Labor leader Bill Hayden prepared the ALP for office and the reformist era of the Hawke-Keating government of the 1980s and 1990s.
has been remembered as a voice of reason who laid the foundations for the reformist Hawke-Keating government of the 1980s and 1990s.
Mr Albanese paid tribute to Mr Hayden, the shadow treasurer who became Labor leader in 1977, and who realised the ALP needed to convince voters it was a credible alternative if it ever wanted to win office again. Others attending included federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers, federal Speaker Milton Dick, former treasurer Wayne Swan and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.
Mr Keating said Mr Hayden’s emergence in the ALP’s Centre-Left faction in the late 1960s was the momentum for Labor to set itself up as a credible political force after years in the political wilderness. This included John Dawkins, Ralph Willis, Susan Ryan, Mick Young, John Button, Neal Blewett and Gareth Evans, who would form the foundation of the Hawke-Keating government of the 1980s and 1990s.“It was in this role that Bill really hit his straps,” Mr Keating recalled, making inroads against the Fraser government that set them up for victory in the 1983 election.
Despite the decision, which would consume other politicians, Mr Hayden maintained his sense of humour.Fairfax
