Children under the age of 16 in Pennsylvania may soon have to ask a parent or guardian to sign off on being able to open a social media account.
In a near party-line vote, the state House on Wednesday passed legislation requiring social media companies to get parental consent before allowing someone under the age of 16 to create an account. Platforms would also be required to notify parents if a child circumvents the requirement.
'There's a lot of advantages for young adults to be on social media. There's a collaborative nature that takes place, there's aspirations of other visions, there's socialization that happens on these platforms,' he said. But Palmer noted that the positives can also be met with some negatives as well.
