March 14, 2024 State lawmakers want to help Ohio's law enforcement agencies with the cost of purchasing new police K9s for their forceState Rep. Sean Brennan and Rep. Josh Williams are the lead sponsors of a bill. They want to give each agency up to $20,000 per dog to offset the cost of acquiring, training and equipping narcotics dogs that don't alert to the smell of marijuana.

Whitehall K9 officer Matthew Perez said the cost of dogs can range anywhere between $7,500 and $11,000. Perez is the handler of K9 Rico, the department's newest and only dog not trained to detect marijuana.Police dogs out of a job? Williams said the bill is not intended to force departments to retire those K9s -- rather, they are encouraging agencies to find alternative uses for those dogs.
