A submersible that vanished in waters off Canada during a tourism expedition to explore the Titanic could have as little as 70 hours of oxygen left, with a British billionaire among those on board.
A massive search is underway for a submersible that remains missing off the southeast coast of Canada.The Titan, which has oxygen for up to 96 hours for its pilot and four passengers, went missing nearly 2 hours into dive.
US and Canadian ships and planes have swarmed the area about 1450 km east of Cape Cod, some dropping sonar buoys that can monitor to a depth of 3962 meters, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said.Undated photo provided by OceanGate Expeditions in June 2021 shows the company’s Titan submersible.“We are deploying all available assets to make sure that we can locate the craft and rescue the people on board,” he said.
OceanGate said: “We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible.” The company is operating its fifth Titanic “mission” of 2023, according to its website, which had been scheduled to start last week and finish on Thursday.
