Factories to produce missiles, a more potent navy and faster decisions on buying new weapons will feature as part of a major military review.
The Albanese government will spend billions of dollars to urgently build factories for the local production of American-designed missiles, as part of the Defence Force’s biggest shake-up in decades, to deter conflict with a rapidly militarising China.
Defence Minister Richard Marles said the review was incredibly important because it would restate Australia’s strategic posture for the first time in more than 35 years as part of a new doctrine of “impactful projection”.“We live in a very complex and difficult world. And we need to be alive to that.
Providing a back-up source of supply would help gain US government approval to transfer licences and intellectual property to Australia. Other missiles that Australia could seek and eventually be built here are the Patriot system and the ship-based Standard Missile 6 , both of which would form the crux of missile defence systems.
As part of the shake-up, it is expected the military will have a greater focus on conducting maritime and amphibious operations in the Pacific and Asia, given the region’s flashpoints.
