The midfielder has been loving life in Scotland's midfield ahead of another major test this week.
Billy Gilmour got a close up view of Ansu Fati’s goalscoring quality when the Barcelona wonderkid netted a double in a UEFA Youth Champions League semi-final against Chelsea.
“But I saw he got a late call-up so I just texted him to say, ‘See you soon’. So that will be nice but of course I want to go out there and win. Gilmour was an unused sub as Scotland dumped Spain 2-0 at Hampden in March. But he has been back patrolling the middle of the park for Steve Clarke’s side alongside Callum McGregor in the last three games tand helped make it a perfect five wins from five in Group A.
“He is definitely one of the players who is senior and drives the team forward. We know it’s going to be a tough game but we are in a really good place, 15 points from 15. But it’s a big game and we will go there, give it our all and hopefully get the win. But an ill-timed bout of Covid cruelly ruled him out of the third and decisive group game back at Hampden as Croatia delivered a knockout blow. And Gilmour would love to be back there in five years’ time. He said: “I never got the chance to play at Hampden last time. It will be a lot better this time because it was Covid.
With 20 caps to his name at the age of just 22 Gilmour could well become only the second Scotland player to break the 100 caps barrier. And he said: “Yeah I’m enjoying it, I love coming away with Scotland. The manager trusts me, all the boys are great, it’s a great place to be. I love coming away.”
