BioWare, Electronic Arts' renowned studio, has announced a restructuring plan that prioritizes the development of the next Mass Effect game. This move involves reassigning many employees to other EA teams, following the underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. A core team, led by veterans from the original Mass Effect trilogy, is now focused on the upcoming installment.
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced a restructuring at its BioWare studio, marking a shift in focus towards the development of the next Mass Effect game. The move, described as an effort to make the company 'more agile,' involves reassigning 'many' BioWare employees to other EA teams. This decision comes after Dragon Age: The Veilguard 's recent release, which reportedly underperformed by missing sales expectations by nearly 50%.
BioWare general manager Gary McKay confirmed that a core team is now dedicated to developing the next Mass Effect, led by veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others. McKay emphasized BioWare's commitment to innovation and delivering an exceptional experience for fans, stating that they are reimagining their development process during this stage. While EA claims that BioWare has the 'right number of people in the right roles' to work on Mass Effect, the announcement has raised concerns about the studio's future. At least one BioWare developer who worked on Dragon Age: The Veilguard confirmed on Bluesky, a social media platform, that they had been laid off. EA declined to comment on the possibility of further job cuts. The studio has previously attempted to become 'more agile' in August 2023, but the results remain unclear. The next Mass Effect is currently in development, and EA will discuss its financial performance and future plans, including BioWare's role, during its investor conference call on February 4th.
