A bird flu prevention zone has been declared for the whole of England and Scotland
While the rising number of bird flu cases pose a risk to the health and welfare of birds, the risk to humans remains low prevention zone has been declared for the whole of England and Scotland to contain the rising number of cases recorded since last year.
The risk to the general population from bird flu is still classed as low because the virus cannot currently spread between people and all human cases to date involved contact with infected birds or animals. This time last year, the threat was deemed to be Level 3, where there is “limited or facilitated mammalian transmission”., indicating “sustained and/or multispecies mammalian outbreaks; increasing human zoonotic cases or limited person-to-person spread, linked to zoonotic exposures”.
A housing order requiring birds to be kept in enclosures in coastal counties from Suffolk to East Riding of Yorkshire which came into force in mid-December has also been extended.A 3km protection zone has been put in place around infected premises, which are also required to house all birds.
