Experts believe the high figure is due to long-standing, deep-rooted issues such as inequality and socio-economic concerns.
University College London conducted a study on BAME deaths and while its figures differ from the official ONS figures, they are still worryingly high.
‘We think that the underlying reasons for that are long-standing issues, such as income and equality.’ Statistics show that people from BAME communities are statistically more likely to die from Covid-19 but the details have been limited and concerns have been raised over the choice of some controversial panel members.Dr Adnan Sharif, a consultant nephrologist at Queen Elizabeth hospital, said he hopes the University hospitals Birmingham NHS trust’s own investigation will allow them to look closer at socioeconomic concerns in a way that may not be as easy on a national scale.
Overcrowded accommodation has been suggested as one of the possible factors which could contribute to increased death rates among BAME communities, as the more people that live in one household, the higher the risk of exposure to the virus.
