School unlawfully segregates pupils by sex - and boys are given 'more privileges'

A BIRMINGHAM Islamic school unlawfully segregated pupils by sex - and boys were treated favourably and given more privileges, an Ofsted report has found.

The school caters for 152 pupils and the inspectors' report stated boys and girls are "unlawfully segregated by sex" all day except for weekly assemblies. "Some of the girls told us that they do not like this. They said that this was not fair and feel disadvantaged." Mr Rasool said:"We believe the idea that boys are 'given favourable treatment and more opportunities than girls' is just not accurate as all the previous Ofsted reports have noted that provision for boys and girls has been equal and fair.

Based on a three-day inspection visit conducted in mid-November last year, the Ofsted report said girls were not provided with the same range of extra-curricular activities as boys. "This policy causes the following detriment to pupils: girls are treated less favourably than boys; girls are not provided with the same range of extra-curricular activities as boys; girls are required to wear their school uniform when on school trips, whereas boys are not; girls are given application forms for work experience after they have been given to boys.
