Hospitality leaders in Birmingham have called on local and national governments to provide more support for the struggling night-time economy. The plea comes as the industry battles declining numbers of businesses and rising costs, with leaders highlighting the challenges of attracting people back to city centre venues.
Hospitality leaders in Birmingham have issued an urgent call to both local and national governments to provide greater support for the night-time economy. This plea comes at the start of an international summit dedicated to the sector in the city. Mayor Richard Parker emphasized that the West Midlands Combined Authority is actively providing grants to assist businesses in expanding their operations, hiring more local employees, and implementing energy-efficient measures.
However, figures from the Night Time Industries Association reveal a concerning trend: the number of businesses operating within the night-time economy has been steadily declining since the onset of the pandemic. Between March 2020 and September 2024, Birmingham lost 163 firms associated with cultural, entertainment, food and drink venues, as well as those that supply them. The industry summit took place at Hockley Social Club, a street food venue that has creatively diversified its offerings to include comedy and classical music nights in an effort to attract visitors. The venue's founder, Jack Brabant, shared his struggles, stating, 'Every week is a struggle, we are fighting to get people to come through the door.' Brabant pointed to factors like the rise of remote work and inadequate transportation links as contributing to the challenges faced by hospitality businesses in the city center. Poppy Ringrose, who manages social media for two venues and her own club night, echoed the sentiment that people are cutting back on their social outings due to rising costs. 'People, I think, are picking and choosing,' she explained. 'They can't just go out every single weekend. It's like a once-a-month thing, because you've got to be more careful with your money.' Adrian Alexander, from West Midlands Jerk Centre, acknowledged the financial pressures faced by the hospitality industry, stating, 'It's really difficult trying to balance value for money with the rising costs of things all the time. It's finding that balance without compromising the quality.' Mayor Parker underscored the importance of the night-time economy to the vibrancy of the West Midlands, stating his commitment to making a difference and driving growth. He emphasized his collaboration with industry leaders across various sectors to improve people's lives.
