East Midlands Airport security teams confiscate hundreds of unusual items each month, ranging from festive decorations to potentially dangerous tools and even bodily fluids.
Frozen turkeys, Robin Hood's bow and arrow, chainsaws and a bottle of urine - these are just some of the most bizarre items security teams at East Midlands Airport (EMA) have had to confiscate from passengers. Planning for a trip abroad can be stressful and seem like a never-ending checklist that might make some people question if that long-awaited holiday is even worth the fuss.
Packing is dreaded by many and, while most of us may have forgotten items in our hand luggage such as beauty products over 100ml, lighters or a half-full water bottle, there is a minority of people who have tried bringing some harder to explain items through the security scanners at EMA. You might think this includes knives of some sort of Christmas crackers that could have been innocently used at one's destination. And while it does include these items, they are not the strangest on the list. Besides Christmas crackers, passengers have attempted (and failed) to take other festive items, such as party poppers, fireworks and even frozen turkeys, through the scanners. Dangerous items such as knives, a bread knife, chainsaws, a large toolbox and a Stanley knife have also made the list of the strangest items confiscated at EMA. The list doesn't stop here, though, and continues with lava lamps, gym weights, a gun-shaped bottle of brandy, bullet casings, car rust-proofing oil, pigeon spikes, oars, a hockey stick and a car battery. The one that tops them all, probably, is a bottle of urine, which also had to be confiscated at the airport. Some toys are also banned because they have a resemblance to weapons, such as Nerf guns, water pistols – including one shaped like a rubber duck – and a Robin Hood bow and arrow from Nottingham Castle. So if you're planning to give your family and friends abroad one of those this Christmas, think again. More than 300 items are confiscated every month at EMA so it is important to know what will, and won't, make it through securit
