Earlier this year, something magical happened. No, I’m not talking about the day dried pasta finally returned to the shelves of my local Tesco. I’m talking about 11 May, the day that Nicki Minaj’s remix of Doja Cat’s disco bop “Say So” reached number one in the US, making history as the first song by two female rappers ever to top Billboard’s chart.
It wasn’t so much about what she was saying in her lyrics; rather, the way she was saying them, with slick and fearless delivery. I also was interested in the fact that whenever she made sexual references to her body, it was an act that was ultimately in her control, not that of a man.
It should also be noted that the majority of female rappers who have climbed up the charts of late are lack, a demographic that has been historically underrepresented in media and undervalued in society. Not long ago, Megan Thee Stallion was shot in an incident involving Tory Lanez, but rather than extend sympathy, the internet meme-ified her trauma. “If she wasn’t a woman of colour, people would take it more seriously,” asserts Rose. “I feel like a lot of people are just seeing it as a joke.
