Blackburn has been given a £5.3m one-year recovery grant and an extra £4.4m specifically for social care

Blackburn with Darwen Council bosses have welcomed a £9.7million boost in its government grant. The authority has received an 8.4 per cent increase in its Core Spending Power for 2025/26 – above the England average of six per cent – in the annual Local Government Settlement announced on Wednesday.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s finance boss Cllr Vicky McGurk said: “We have £5.3m in the form of a much-needed recovery grant and also £4.4m extra funding specifically for social care. It’s a good start to replacing the funding we’ve lost since austerity began and will help us make sure nobody gets left behind and better tackle inequalities that exist.

“After many years, our needs have finally been recognised as has the importance of providing good quality council services. We can make good use of the extra spending power, directed at rebuilding and improving services to build happier, healthier and safer communities."
