Blackburn bishop's apology as nine cases of alleged abuse uncovered in major review
The acting bishop of Blackburn has apologised to the victims of nine cases of alleged abuse which were uncovered in a major review.
Safeguarding issues were identified relating to clergy and church officers with “past inappropriate behaviours whose risk had not been assessed”, while the diocese says most cases raised were not recent ones. It also pointed to a “distinct improvement” in recent years. “I believe that this review and the report which has come from it will make the Diocese of Blackburn a safer place to be. I am grateful for all the recommendations which we have in the executive summary and am determined to ensure that we embed, and continually evaluate best practice in safeguarding, because without it we would not be able to achieve our Diocesan vision of healthy churches, transforming communities.
