Over the past five years, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has paid out over £100,000 in compensation to pedestrians injured due to road and footpath defects. The council paid a total of £116,964.67, with the highest amount paid out in 2022 (£47,459.79). Only 12 out of 153 pedestrian accident claims were settled with compensation.
Pedestrians claimed more than £100,000 in compensation against Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council relating to injuries caused by road and footpath defects over the last five years.
A total of 33 claims were made against the council in 2020, the third-highest number of claims over the past five years. Two years later, this number increased to 37 claims while the council experienced a drop in claims over the past year, with a total of 20 claims. Dean Langton, Strategic Director of Finance, commented: “The figures quoted relate to claims received from members of the public using facilities and streets/roads that the Council is responsible for on foot, and not just potholes and footway defects.
