Blackpool Town Hall planners have approved proposals to enhance the external lighting of the Grade II listed Grand Theatre, aiming to improve visibility and highlight the building's architectural features.
Proposals to enhance the external lighting of Blackpool 's Grade II listed Grand Theatre have received approval. Town hall planners have granted listed building consent for these modifications utilizing their delegated authority. No objections were raised by heritage officials regarding the scheme, which also encompasses replacing external shutters with internal shutters at select shopfronts on Church Street connected to the theatre.
The application (reference 24/0452) underwent revisions to the initial lighting proposal following discussions with planning officers. A report outlining the decision states: 'The alterations would benefit the Town Centre Conservation Area and the listed building by removing external shutters, improving the shopfronts, and sensitively enhancing the visibility of the theatre. The proposal would elevate the significance and special architectural or historic interest of this heritage asset, making a positive contribution to local character and distinctiveness and the Town Centre Conservation Area.' Approved works include the installation of two rows of horizontal LED festoon lighting with clear globes positioned above the ground floor fascia level and above the first-floor windows to illuminate the building. Initially, additional lighting around the windows was proposed, but this was withdrawn at the request of council officers who deemed the horizontal lighting 'sufficient and would not detract from the historic character of the building or the conservation area.' Up-lighters are planned to be situated behind the existing ground floor canopy, illuminating the dome at the corner of Church Street and Corporation Street, further enhancing the building
