Famous faces have turned on the Blackpool Illuminations for decades on end
The Blackpool Illuminations switch on is always a big event. Thousands of people attend each year to witness a show featuring pop stars and more before counting down to the big moment where the light are turned on.
This year's switch on was done by Murder of the Dancefloor singer and radio presenter Sophie Ellis-Bextor. It was the first major switch on to take place outdoors following on from the Covid disruptions.Last year's event culminated in celebrity designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen switching on the lights and among the artists performing was Mae Muller who would go on to feature at Eurovision.
We've delved into the archive to look back on some of those big moments in years gone by and the selection of stars who've stepped out in Blackpool. While some of the fashion leaves a lot to be desired, the memories of good times hold up much better. Among those included in our collection are comedy legend Peter Kay; pop stars Geri Halliwell, Robbie Williams, Olly Murs and Little Mix; boy bands Blue, McFly, and Busted; and even former boxer Ricky Hatton The line ups also threw up some unlikely combinations - with Dale Winton and David Tennant teaming up one year and Boyzone sharing a bill with Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson another year.
