Blackpool South MP Scott Benton is under investigation for alleged misuse of his email address
Blackpool South MP Scott Benton is one of three MPs who has been placed under investigation by parliament's standards watchdog.
It is understood that Mr Benton was reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards for the alleged misuse of his official parliamentary email by sending communications for party political purposes. LancsLive understands it specifically refers to an email sent in the form of a press release that was critical of Chris Webb, the Labour Party candidate for Blackpool South in the next general election.
The investigation into Mr Benton comes only a week after the MP had the Tory whip removed undercover report by The Times reportedly showed him offering to lobby politicians in exchange for money. The investigation alleges Mr Benton was prepared to leak market sensitive information to a gambling industry investment fund and ask parliamentary questions on its behalf. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stripped Mr Benton of the Tory Party whip after increasing pressure mounted to do so.
