In scenes shown in a one-off Channel 4 documentary Lighting Up Christmas, cameras went the behind-the-scenes
TV designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gave the team behind Blackpool's Christmas Lights just three weeks to complete a huge projection show. Similar projects would usually take three to four months to create.
Laurence, who has helped to curate the illuminations on the Golden Mile and promenade for the past 15 years, was tasked with helping to find a way to bring Christmas to an already-illuminated Blackpool. The Changing Rooms star wanted to project a "powerful seasonal backdrop" onto the Tower and the Comedy Carpet, which would tie in with the seafront Christmas by the Sea event on Tower Festival Headland.
"We want to focus on the loveliness at the bottom of the tower. I love Odssey as it is not what you expect. I want perpetual snow flurry on the face of building. I want blues, lilacs and pink to integrate Odyssey. There is no space in this town for subtlety and that is why I love it to death."
