The Guardians have placed a trade deadline acquisition on the injured list and promoted a top pick from 2023.
Cleveland Guardians starter Alex Cobb throws a practice pitch after an injury as pitching coach Carl Willis, front right, watches during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Cleveland, Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024. CLEVELAND, Ohio — Alex Cobb is heading back to the injured list and the Guardians will get a look at their No. 22 prospect as right-hander Andrew Walters has joined the club prior to Thursday’s series opener against Tampa Bay.
Cobb’s Cleveland debut was delayed by blister issues in August. But he went 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in three starts for the Guardians after being activated Aug. 9. A blister flared up on his middle finger after the Sept. 1 outing, and Cobb has been working to return to Cleveland’s rotation for more than a week.
Walters, 23, was Cleveland’s second-round pick out of Miami in 2023. He was a closer for the Hurricanes, recording 26 saves in his time in south Florida, while allowing just 16 earned runs in 102 innings. The 6-foot-4, 222-pound Palm Bay, Fla. native has posted a 2.32 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 50 innings in the minors this season.
