The defence barrister for alleged double murderer Gregory Lynn has accused the prosecution of collaborating with a blood splatter expert to bring in a new “half-baked” theory without warning.
Gellatly said he understood his obligations as an expert to act impartially and only give evidence within his field of specialised knowledge, and maintained the theory was considered as part of his testing in 2022, and not in recent weeks or days as suggested by the defence. Former Jetstar pilot Gregory Lynn is on trial over the alleged murders of Carol Clay and Russell Hill.“I was trying to explain why I was aiming to sample that region. I wasn’t trying to be a ballistics expert because I’m not, I was trying to explain why I was targeting that particular area of the gun, which may explain proximity,” he continued.
He said while ultimately no trace of blood was found on the gun, an unidentified DNA sample was found inside the barrel.Earlier on Thursday, Gellatly explained that DNA could be used as a forensic tool for various reasons including to help show if one or more people may have been present at a scene, or to help corroborate or refute a witness account.
He said while testing was unable to formally identify the six drops as blood, possibly due to damage from a nearby fire, they did contain Clay’s DNA.
