Good Morning Britain told a crimewave is hitting disabled drivers as thieves try to save as much as £6,000 a year in parking
All Blue Badge holders have been handed a £500 warning because criminals are targeting their vehicles. Speaking on Good Morning Britain disability campaigner and MP Liam Conlon said a crimewave was leaving the disabled without the ability to park - and urged the government to create an electronic alternative as it can take six months to get a replacement.
Mr Conlan explained: “I think people are taking them to avoid parking charges. So we know that people steal them from cars. People are selling them for £4 to £500 pounds a time and avoiding parking charges then of up to £6,000 a year, right? It’s huge saving for people. So obviously, then you’re defrauding the taxpayer. So the thing I say to people about this is there are victims like Shani.
She explained that the theft had in fact stopped her going out because she can’t use public transport and lots of tube stations aren’t step free. She added: “So then the other option is paying thousands in taxis. So for me, it was a really big, really big shock. I had to change things and it really made me feel disabled. I, I feel like my health condition doesn’t disable me. It’s not having access. That really disables me.
“So I just thought so it’s just going to happen again and again and again and again.” So what you mean is, they can’t once it’s stolen, they can’t cancel that particular badge. So a parking attendant who sees it in the thieves car doesn’t know it’s a stolen badge. It’s got all my personal details on the back and a picture of me.
