Corpus Christi beaches have seen “blue waves,” made up of Portuguese man o’ wars, by-the-wind sailors and blue buttons, washing ashore.

Heading to the Texas Coast anytime soon? If so, keep your eyes peeled for the thousands of jellyfish that have washed ashore. In an April 26 Facebook post, the Corpus Christi -based Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies showed off the natural and manmade items that have recently washed up on the beach, from snails and crabs to purses and illegal fishing nets.

A photo that caught people’s attention was of a man o' war with a purple storm snail attached. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, man o’ wars float on currents and wash up on Texas beaches from the spring to late summer. It can be difficult to spot a man o’ war or other jellyfish species while swimming, but if there are jellies washed up along the beach, there’s a good chance they are in the water.
