Contrary to Angels GM Perry Minasian's 'pretty self-explanatory' response, Shohei Ohtani's future is anything but. A lot can happen quickly before the trade deadline, and L.A. needs to assess if it wants to trade its star or risk losing him for nothing.

The point here is simple. As good as things are going for the Angels, there’s far too much time between now and the trade deadline to lock in this team’s direction. Just more than two weeks ago, the Angels were 5 1/2 games out of the wild card. A lot can happen quickly, and the Angels need to assess one way or another where things stand when the time comes.

But from a cold and non-emotional perspective — a perspective any good GM should have — the next steps need to require nuanced contemplation. And, if all those things are on the table, is Moreno willing to exceed the luxury tax threshold to maintain a competitive roster with the expense of Rendon andearning more than $73 million combined? He has said he is, but actions will speak louder than words. And he’s always operated below that threshold.

“As much as you plan, guess what? Plans change,” Minasian said. “You have to be able to adjust and understand the landscape. For me, it’s just any way to get better.”
